The heavy rains wiped out most of the oddities on Extreme Day at Calder. Races were off the turf and thus the world’s fastest daily double (simultaneous races on the dirt and turf course) became just a plain old daily double. The King George Wrong Way was run counter-clockwise as usual at 10f on the dirt. The upside of the weather was that the Umphrey Marathon was moved to the dirt, resulting in the scratch of heavily favorite One Off and a much more competitive race. Tacit Agreement and India Halo ran together on the lead for much of the race until Tacit Agreement sprinted away around the fourth and final turn. The time was a pedestrian 3:374 on a sloppy surface with the first mile taken at an absolute crawl. The fractions (that I can recall) were :27, :55, 1:51, and 2:18. I have no clue how the Beyer boys or Thorograph will calculate speed figures for this one.
Unfortunately for the race’s future, there was this from Calder President and GM Ken Dunn,
We haven't selected the date yet, but we're definitely planning to bring the whole card back, except the two-mile turf race will not be worth $250,000
Oh well, but not unexpected. While I was hoping they would make this a standout race for stayers and earn graded status down the road, at least they are planning to keep it on the racing calendar. That was not the only bad news. Monmouth Park did not run the $60,000 Majestic Light, which was scheduled for yesterday, because of lack of entries. The Majestic Light was to be run at 13f on the main track. This is too bad and somewhat surprising considering they were able to draw a reasonably accomplished field for the 12f Point Given in mid-June (won by Malibu Moonshine in a track record time of 2:312).
