Tiznow

Two-time Breeders' Cup Classic winner Tiznow got off sensational start as a sire, capturing the freshman sire title in 2005 based on the performance of champion Folklore. Now it seems as if Tiznow is just a one horse wonder. If you take Folklore out of the equation, his offsprings' lifetime earnings total $1,020,690, which would place him 25th among second crop sires, surrounded by a bunch of $5000 regional stallions. Folklore's $945,500 catapults him to 10th. Despite the best mares (2.34 CI), Tiznow has sired just one stakes winner and has only 36% runners and 13% winners from 181 foals. This is well below every other top 20 second crop sire except Aptitude (39%/19%) and Point Given (38%/18%). While Tiznow is struggling, Aptitude and Point Given are just starting to hit their best stride. Point Given's runners have earned $2,482,176 of which 94% has come this year – Aptitude’s are $2,471,386 and 85% while Tiznow’s lag behind with $1,966,190 and 35%.

I very much would like to see Tiznow succeed. He was a great champion and tenacious fighter when hooked. He is one of only a handful of stallions from the sire line of the great Man o'War and thus traces back to Matchem and Goldophin Arabian. He also appears to be a good source of stamina (7.5f average winning distance). Yet, outside of Folklore, things have not looked good.

Speaking of young sires, Monarchos looks like bust for Claiborne Farm. His $930,262 in lifetime earnings ranks him 28th.

Perhaps it is a bit early to start writing off these young sires. One of the big criticisms of the breeding industry is moving young stallions out of the KY or abroad before they have really gotten a fair shake. However, with increased foal crop size, young stallions have two to four times as many horses at the track as their predecessors. The larger sample size gives a more accurate assessment of a sire’s ability (reducing the variance in AEI).
