Saratoga Day 5 (Sunday)
Saturday's results
My early Pick 4s were through after the first leg when My Typhoon held on to win the Diana. Attila's Storm (13-1) ran a huge to finish second in the Vanderbilt behind Diabolical to complete an $80 exacta I should've had. Lawyer Ron ($13) cut my losses with his impressive win in the Whitney, record time or not. Total bet yesterday was $282 ($16 in scratches) with a return of $195 from the $30 win bet on Lawyer Ron. That comes to a loss of $87.
Bankroll $1637.50
Turnover $714
So I'm going to bet against Derby winner Street Sense. Nafzger has a record of using prep races to sharpen his steeds without necessarily picking up the win (Unbridled's fall campaign in 1990 for example) and Street Sense goals are the Travers and the Breeders' Cup Classic (not the Grade II Jim Dandy). Nafzger said "He may come up a little short. Somebody may get the jump on him; I just want him to execute. His fitness and his timing will get where he needs to be. I want him to win, but the main thing is I want him to execute." (see drf article)
So who do we go with? Assmussen doesn't think he has a chance with Tiz Wonderful, the logical horse to beat Street Sense. "To realistically think you're going to beat Street Sense with a horse that is coming off that kind of a layoff is pretty wild," Asmussen said. "I'm definitely somebody who has an enormous amount of respect for Street Sense and definitely do know what it takes to beat him, and that's a great horse with a great effort."
So I'll take C P West and hopes he passes the fading Cowtown Cat and Flashstorm at the head of the stretch and has enough to hold off the fast closing Derby winner.
Race 9 (Jim Dandy PPs):
$50 Win C P West
The rest of the card is unappealing: NY Breds, Claimers, and 2yo maidens.
Total Bet $50
