Evening Attire
Evening Attire captured the G3 Queens County Handicap to notch his 14th win in 63 starts at the ripe old age of 9. This walk out of the gate and run from the clouds gelding was in the same foal crop as Point Given, Monarchos, Orientate, and Macho Uno. At four he won the G2 Saratoga Breeders' Cup Handicap (2:02.4 for 10f - don't you wish they still ran this race) and the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup (1:59.2). I played him and Medaglia d'Oro in the '02 Breeders' Cup (my first Pick Six team - the Drexel boys took it down). After completing his 4yo season he was 19-8-4-1 and had banked $1,522,810. If he wasn't a gelding, he'd be off to stud. If he wasn't by Black Tie Affair out of an Our Native mare, he might not have been gelded. Luckily for us he has raced the last five years and while the wins have been few and far between (in the last five years he is 44-6-9-8 with $1,227,084 in earnings), he has remained a solid competitor and someone to always look for when they turn for home. He's nothing more than a Grade 3 horse and one dimensional closer anymore but does his decline in talent tarnish his JCGC win? Hell no, and nor would letting Funny Cide (about to turn 8) continue to race make us think less of his Derby win or Eclipse award. Let'em run. Here is hoping we see a few more years of Evening Attire.
