The first table lists the non-finishers in each Breeders' Cup. There are a total of 36 horses or 1.7% of 2112 runners that did not finish their race. Of these 36 non-finishers, 21 were eased, 7 pulled up, 2 fell, and 6 broke down. The second table summarizes the data, breaking it down by turf (T) and dirt (D) and giving the percentage of starters with incidents. It is interesting to note that six of the seven Breeders' Cups contested in California have been incident free. There has never been a breakdown in California Breeders' Cup. It is disturbing that of the six Breeders' Cup with breakdowns, three are from the last three runnings. Based on 160 starters (90 synthetic, 70 turf) the 2008 edition projects 2.7 incidents, 1.6 horses eased and 1.1 more serious (pulled up, fall, break down).
