Derby/Oaks Futures
Spring Break at last! Now I can catch up on my grading, research (horse racing related of course), betting, and blogging.
I bet the Derby and Oaks Futures for the first time in a few years. I bet $20 on Friesan Fire in the Derby and $20 on Rock Candy in the Oaks.
Friesan Fire's Louisiana Derby was breath taking and unlike past flash in the pans to come up from New Orleans, FF should improve as winter turns to spring and prep routes become classic stamina tests. He is by A. P. Indy, the top current source of stamina in the breed, and is from a top notch female family from down under. I get $184 if he wins on May 2nd.
I bet Rock Candy in the Gasparilla and she won and paid $10.20. I bet her back in the Florida Oaks and she finished third, nine lengths behind winner Don't Forget Gil. Toss the FL Oaks, she was impossibly wide turning for home and wasn't asked in the stretch. Rock Candy is by Mineshaft out of a Pleasant Colony mare so she can run all day long. The price is right - I get $2038 if she wins on May 1st.
