Breeders' Cup lengthens the Marathon

The race will now be 1 3/4 miles. The move was made to bring the race in line with international rules and standards.

If I were in charge I would stretch it to two miles, rename it the Gold Cup, and raise the purse to $1,000,000 (and of course run the race on dirt).

1 3/4 miles isn't a marathon. It is 3/4 mile shorter than the Ascot Gold Cup. A marathon should be 4 miles. 19th century thoroughbreds were matched in multiple four mile heats with an hour separating them. Ah, the good old days.

If you want to learn a little about early American horse racing, I highly recommend John Eisenberg's The Great Match Race: When North Met South in America's First Sports Spectacle (2006) which chronicles the 1819 match race between Sir Henry and American Eclipse.
